Overview
Cargills operates across supermarkets, food manufacturing, quick-service restaurants and supply-chain services. The June quarter extended its run of year-on-year sales and profit growth, with operating profitability reaching the strongest level in the comparable June record. That combination is the central positive, although the shares already carry a substantial premium to sector book-value multiples.
Price performance
At LKR 680.00 on 3 September 2026, the share had gained 9.1% over one month against a 1.3% ASPI rise. Returns over the longer three-month to one-year windows remained negative, despite the stock's recent relative strength.
The price sat 25.3% up its 52-week range, closer to the low than the high. Sixty-day volatility was 18.4% above its own one-year norm, while 20-day trading volume was 45.8% below the 60-day average, indicating a more variable but less actively traded recent period.
Valuation
Cargills trades at 16.09 times earnings, above 72% of consumer-retail peers, and at 4.33 times book value, at the sector's 74th percentile. The elevated P/B is partly reconciled by a 26.9% return on equity over the twelve months to June 2026.
The dividend yield is 2.7%. Dividend per share rose to LKR 18.50 in FY2026 from LKR 16.50 in FY2025, so the payout record is moving upward rather than being maintained through a cut.
News and sentiment
Coverage was unusually heavy, with 12 material articles in the past 90 days, including 6 positive and 1 negative item. This was 2.6 times Cargills' normal monthly coverage rate.
The flow included reports of Cargills and CT Holdings divestments and substantial Cargills block trades. The second interim dividend went ex on 25 May 2026 and was paid on 11 June 2026.
Financials
June-quarter gross, operating and net margins were 12.3%, 7.2%, and 3.3%, compared with 12.5%, 7.2%, and 3.4% respectively a year earlier. Revenue, operating profit and net profit nevertheless all increased year-on-year.
June is structurally Cargills' weakest quarter for net margin across five complete years, so the lower net margin should be judged against other June quarters. On that basis, the operating margin was the best of seven comparable June observations and net margin ranked second. Costs below operating profit remained a material deduction from earnings.
Risks
The principal balance-sheet risk is short-term liquidity: the current ratio was 0.75 at March 2026, while gearing was 55.1% of equity attributable to owners. Interest cover of 4.38 times and cash conversion of 1.04 times provide mitigating evidence that annual operating profit was cash-backed.
Consumer-retail conditions are another material risk. As at 3 September 2026, headline inflation was 8.0%, alongside higher fuel costs that can pressure household spending and distribution costs across the sector.
Outlook
As at 3 September 2026, the next scheduled information event is the September 2026 quarter, expected to be filed between 12 November 2026 and 2 March 2027. It will replace the June-quarter evidence and show whether the sales and operating-profit growth continued into the next reporting period.
The Cargills Bank rights issue declared on 9 December 2025 still had no captured ex-date and is past the normal window for this type of event. As at 3 September 2026, the data cannot establish its timing or outcome, so it remains an uncertainty rather than an upcoming scheduled catalyst.
