Overview
Colombo Investment Trust is a concentrated Sri Lankan investment trust with strategic and trading portfolios invested mainly in listed equities and other financial assets. Its latest quarter showed the central tension clearly: revenue increased, but operating and net profit declined sharply, indicating that reported revenue is not a reliable proxy for portfolio earnings.
Price performance
The share closed at LKR 366 on 2026-08-07. It fell 13.5% over three months, compared with a 7.1% decline in the ASPI, but remained up 86.9% over one year against the index's 9.5% gain. The stock sat at 44.8% of its 52-week range, or 32.2% below its high and 62.7% above its low.
Recent trading has been quieter than the company's own longer-term pattern: 60-day annualised volatility was 24.4% below its one-year level, while 20-day average volume was 55.6% below its 60-day average. The price data show substantial two-way movement, but do not establish why the recent underperformance occurred.
Valuation
Valuation is the clearest positive feature. The 2.58 P/E compares with a 7.68 sector median and places CIT at the sector's 0th percentile; its 0.536 P/B is also near the cheapest end, at the 4th percentile. The discount is not wholly unexplained because quarterly earnings have been uneven, even though full-year ROE reached 21.2%.
The 1.1% dividend yield is below the sector median of 3.4%, so income is not the main valuation argument. The payout direction is improving: dividend per share rose from LKR 1.48 in FY2025 to LKR 3.97 in FY2026, although the latest payment was a scrip dividend and the recent history covers only two financial years.
News and sentiment
Company coverage was normal, with three material articles in the 90-day window: one positive, one negative and one neutral. The flow comprised the FY2026 LKR 4 scrip dividend announcement, its published dates, and a 2026-08-07 board and committee composition change.
The dividend notice stated an ex-date and record date of 2026-06-03 and payment on 2026-06-10. No undated corporate action is currently recorded.
Financials
The latest quarter ended 2026-06-30 and was filed on a company basis, like the comparable June quarter. Revenue grew 11.6% year-on-year, while operating profit fell 84.9% and net profit fell 85.2%. This is the key earnings tension: more revenue did not translate into more profit.
Gross margin was 100.0%, versus 81.6% a year earlier. Operating margin fell from 1,697.8% to 230.0%, while net margin fell from 1,697.8% to 224.4%. These unusually high margins are normal for an investment trust because investment gains and other portfolio income are not fully represented by the revenue line. Gross margin ranked among the company's best comparable quarters, while operating and net margins were middling among comparable June quarters.
Full-year results to 2026-03-31 were much stronger, with revenue up 64.4% and net profit up 341.8%. Owners' equity increased from the prior year, while shares outstanding also rose from 7.10 million to 7.21 million, so per-share gains should be considered alongside the larger share base. In the latest quarter, finance costs, tax, associates and foreign-exchange items reduced operating profit by LKR 1.4 million, a relatively small below-the-line drag compared with the operating decline.
Risks
The largest risk is earnings dependence on volatile investment gains rather than recurring operating income: latest-quarter revenue rose while net profit fell 85.2%, and operating and net margins ranked only middling against comparable June quarters.
Balance-sheet leverage is currently limited. Gearing was 0.0% of owners' equity at 2026-03-31 and interest cover was 568 times. Current-ratio and cash-conversion measures are not meaningful for this investment-trust business model, where operating cash flow is dominated by portfolio transactions rather than ordinary trading operations.
Portfolio concentration is a further risk because the strategic portfolio is concentrated in selected listed counters. The 51.7% 60-day annualised volatility and the 13.5% three-month share-price decline show that market exposure can translate into substantial shareholder-value swings even when annual earnings are positive.
Outlook
The next identifiable event is the filing for the quarter ending 2026-09-30. As at 2026-08-08, the exchange timing range in the data is 2026-10-28 to 2027-01-26; that filing will show whether the latest profit contraction was temporary or part of a continuing earnings reset. The current data cannot separate portfolio-market effects from changes in the composition of investment income.
The wider banks and finance backdrop is constructive for fixed-income books, with T-bill yields falling for a fourth consecutive week, but this company is primarily exposed to listed equities. That backdrop therefore provides context rather than evidence of an improvement in CIT's own results.
