Overview
Ceylon Guardian is the Carson Cumberbatch Group's investment house, holding equity stakes and fixed-income investments across Sri Lankan assets. Its business is therefore driven by portfolio income, realised gains and investment valuations rather than conventional operating revenue.
The key change is the sharp reversal in the latest quarter: profitability remained positive, but both operating and net earnings were substantially below the comparable quarter. The result was middling against the company's own comparable June-quarter history, rather than an unusually strong print.
Price performance
At the 28 August 2026 close, the share price was LKR 225. Over six months it fell 15.7%, underperforming the ASPI's 10.9% decline over the same period.
The stock sat at only 12.4% of its 52-week range, close to the LKR 213 low and well below the LKR 310 high. Recent 60-day volatility was 10.6% below its own one-year level, while 20-day average volume was 56.3% above its 60-day average. These observations describe recent trading activity, not price targets or support levels.
Valuation
The valuation is strongest on book value: P/B was 0.51x, at the 0th percentile among sector peers. P/E was 8.79x, above the sector median of 6.97x, so the discount to book is not matched by an equally low earnings multiple.
Twelve-month ROE was 6.2%, which helps explain why a low P/B is more defensible than it would be for a high-return business. The dividend yield was 3.1%; the payout has not been fully consistent, with no dividend recorded for FY2024 before LKR 6.86 per share was recorded for FY2025. The yield therefore offers income, but its recent history does not establish a smooth annual pattern.
News and sentiment
Coverage was normal rather than unusually loud, with four material articles over the 90-day window: one positive, one negative and two neutral. The most material company development was the 28 August disclosure of a purchase of 10.05% of C T Holdings' voting rights.
Other coverage included a proposed LKR 366 million Ceylon Investment share buyback and a 23 July article on Guardian's share repurchase. No undated corporate action is currently listed, and the confirmed dividend events in the data have already occurred.
Financials
The June 2026 quarter brought only 3.3% revenue growth year-on-year, while net profit fell 71.5%. Operating margin narrowed from 434.8% to 138.7%, and net margin narrowed from 417.7% to 115.0%. Gross margin was not disclosed for either quarter. Because investment income is material to this business, these unusually high margins should be read against total income rather than as conventional operating margins.
The latest operating and net margins both ranked 6th of 8 comparable June quarters on a group basis, a middling result. Finance costs, tax, associates and foreign-exchange effects reduced operating profit by LKR 127 million below the operating line, but the main deterioration was already visible in operating earnings.
The latest twelve months to 30 June 2026 still show revenue growth of 56.4%, but the annual picture remains uneven: the audited year ended 31 March 2026 recorded a 7.3% decline in net profit. Shares outstanding changed between reporting periods, so per-share comparisons should not be treated as a clean operating trend without accounting for the share-count change.
Risks
The main risk is earnings volatility: the latest quarter's net profit fell 71.5% year-on-year and the June-quarter net margin ranked only 6th of 8 comparable periods. Investment income can therefore produce sharp changes in reported results even when the portfolio remains intact.
Balance-sheet leverage is modest, with total debt of LKR 1.74 billion and gearing of 5.0% of owners' equity. However, twelve-month cash conversion was only 0.09x, so reported profit did not arrive as equivalent operating cash. Minority shareholders received 14.5% of the latest annual profit, meaning group net profit and earnings attributable to Guardian shareholders are not the same pool of income.
Interest cover is not disclosed, and a conventional current ratio is not meaningful for this finance-sector business. Sector-wide slower lending growth, rising non-performing loans and tighter compliance requirements add external pressure to the banks and finance environment, although the available articles do not attribute those developments specifically to Guardian.
Outlook
The next concrete information point is the group filing for the quarter ending 30 September 2026. As at 29 August 2026, it was expected from 11 November 2026 to 2 February 2027, so the precise filing date was not known. That filing will show whether the June earnings slowdown was followed by another weak quarter or a recovery in portfolio income.
Easier Treasury-bill and bond yields across the market provide a more supportive backdrop for fixed-income placements, but slower credit growth and higher sector compliance pressure remain relevant to the wider banks and finance group. The current data cannot determine how the C T Holdings investment will affect future earnings or portfolio value.
