Overview
Kelani Cables manufactures and distributes power, telecommunications and winding wires, aluminium conductors and electrical accessories through domestic distributors, institutional clients and export relationships.
The important change is that sales continued to grow in the latest quarter, but operating and net profit weakened. This points to margin pressure rather than a demand shortfall as the immediate issue.
Price performance
The share closed at LKR 99.30 on 20 August 2026. On today's adjusted share basis, it fell 9.0% over three months and 24.4% over six months, against ASPI declines of 1.8% and 9.5% respectively.
The stock sits 33.3% below its 52-week high and 36.6% above its low, placing it at 34.9% of that range. Recent annualised volatility was 23.7%, 47.8% below its own one-year level, while 20-day volume was 2.9% above its 60-day average.
The 1:10 share subdivision took effect on 29 December 2025, lifting shares outstanding from 21.8 million to 218 million. The adjusted returns restate history for this change; the unadjusted screen returns are not comparable with the post-subdivision price basis.
Valuation
KCAB trades at 8.82 times earnings and 1.36 times book value, below manufacturing medians of 12.39 and 1.68. Its P/E is at the 14th sector percentile and P/B at the 39th, making earnings valuation the clearer relative attraction.
ROE was 17.4% for the audited year ended March 2025, supporting a positive earnings-based valuation view. The 1.6% dividend yield is below the sector median at the 20th percentile, although the payout has increased from LKR 1.0 per share in FY2024 to LKR 1.5 in FY2025 and LKR 1.6 in FY2026. The latest payout represented 14.2% of earnings and covered earnings 7.03 times.
News and sentiment
Coverage is thin: only one material company article appeared in the past 90 days, and it was positive, covering the LKR 1.6 first interim dividend.
The dividend went ex on 14 August 2026 and payment is due on 4 September 2026. The 1:10 share subdivision ex-date was 29 December 2025.
Financials
For the quarter ended June 2026, revenue rose 8.5% year-on-year to LKR 4.94 billion, but operating profit fell 38.8% to LKR 463 million and net profit fell 1.6% to LKR 648 million. Revenue growth therefore did not translate into profit growth, the key tension in the latest results.
Gross margin narrowed to 16.8% from 23.6%, operating margin to 9.4% from 16.6%, and net margin to 13.1% from 14.5%. Gross and operating margins each ranked 5th of 7 comparable June quarters, while net margin ranked 4th of 7, so the operating deterioration is meaningful against the company's own history.
The below-line items were a net benefit of LKR 185 million, as net profit exceeded operating profit, cushioning the operating decline. Over the twelve months to June 2026, revenue reached LKR 21.01 billion, up 14.5%, with an operating margin of 11.3% and net margin of 11.6%. Equity attributable to owners was LKR 15.96 billion and shares outstanding were 218 million after the subdivision.
Risks
The leading risk is that accounting profit is not converting into cash. Cash conversion was negative at 1.07 times over the twelve months to June 2026, so the recent earnings level was not supported by operating cash generation.
Funding risk is currently contained but working-capital pressure bears watching: total debt was LKR 697 million against LKR 15.96 billion of owners' equity at June 2026. Gearing was not disclosed, while interest cover was 44.48 times and the current ratio was 4.9 times at March 2025.
The broader manufacturing backdrop was constructive, with July PMI at 55.0, but energy markets remained volatile and inflation stayed above the 5% target. These conditions can affect input costs and margins, while the company-specific data does not yet show a recovery in operating profitability.
Outlook
As at 20 August 2026, the next confirmed cash event is the LKR 1.6 dividend payment due on 4 September 2026. The next results are for the quarter ending 30 September 2026 and are expected, based on exchange filing timing, between 7 November 2026 and 5 January 2027.
That filing is the next material test of whether the June operating-margin compression was temporary or continued into the subsequent quarter. The current data cannot establish the cause of the margin decline or whether negative cash conversion has reversed; the next filing should provide the first updated evidence.
