Overview
Richard Pieris Exports is an export-oriented manufacturer of rubber-based products, natural latex foam and fillers for the rubber industry, serving industrial and consumer markets through its Sri Lankan manufacturing base.
The most important change is operational: after losses in the June 2025 quarter, the group returned to both operating and net profitability in June 2026. The recovery is meaningful, but profitability remains modest relative to the valuation placed on the shares.
Price performance
REXP closed at LKR 341 on 2026-08-14. Over three months, the share fell 14.7% while the ASPI fell 5.6%, creating a clear divergence from the broader market.
The price sits at just 8.7% of its 52-week range above the low. Recent volatility was 26.3% below the company’s own one-year level, while 20-day volume was 58.9% below its 60-day average. The data contains no company news that accounts for the three-month decline, while operating margins improved during the same period.
Valuation
The valuation gap is the central constraint. REXP trades at 94.42 times earnings, against a manufacturing-sector median of 12.62, placing it at the sector’s 95th percentile. By contrast, its 1.02 P/B is at the 26th percentile versus a sector median of 1.85, consistent with a modest trailing ROE of 4.7% rather than a premium profitability profile.
The 2.6% dividend yield is below the sector median of 3.2% and sits at the 35th percentile. The recorded payout has moved from LKR 12 per share in FY2025 and FY2024 to LKR 9 in FY2026, while the payout ratio is 249% and dividend cover is 0.4 times. The latest year’s dividend record may be incomplete, so the lower figure alone does not establish a cut.
News and sentiment
Direct coverage is thin: no material company articles were recorded in the 90 days to 2026-08-14, and there was no company news in the last 30 days. The latest recorded company item was the FY2026 first interim dividend of LKR 9 per share, which went ex-dividend on 2026-04-10 and was payable on 2026-04-30.
Financials
Revenue rose 24.7% year on year in the June 2026 quarter, while operating profit turned positive by LKR 139 million and net profit turned positive by LKR 157 million. Gross margin improved to 15.6% from 11.5%, operating margin to 2.8% from negative 7.0%, and net margin to 6.2% from negative 4.1%.
The latest quarter was middling against comparable June quarters: gross, operating and net margins each ranked 5th of 8 on the group basis. Net margin was the exception across all comparable quarters, ranking 2nd of 12. The below-line result added LKR 57 million to operating profit, meaning finance costs, tax, associates and foreign-exchange effects improved reported net profit beyond the operating result.
The twelve months to 2026-06-30 remain less convincing: revenue fell 8.0%, operating margin was negative 0.2% and net margin was 2.5%. The trailing ROE was 4.7%, so the June turnaround has not yet translated into strong returns across the full period.
Risks
The largest risk is financing pressure. At 2025-03-31, gearing was 75.2% of owners’ equity, interest cover was negative 3.13 times and the current ratio was 1.17. Total debt in the latest June quarter was LKR 2.41 billion, making earnings sensitive to operating interruptions and borrowing costs.
Cash conversion was negative 24.03 times over the twelve months to 2026-06-30, so the trailing profit did not arrive as operating cash. Annual free cash flow was negative LKR 734 million at 2025-03-31. Minority shareholders also accounted for 116.9% of reported profit in that period, meaning group net profit and the earnings attributable to REXP shareholders were materially different pots of money.
The manufacturing sector backdrop adds execution risk: export expansion is supportive, but reported labour shortages could constrain capacity. Fuel prices have also risen about 47%, while the rupee has strengthened, creating a mixed environment for an export manufacturer.
Outlook
The next specific event is the filing for the quarter ending 2026-09-30. As at 2026-08-14, the exchange history places that filing’s expected window between 2026-11-05 and 2027-01-19; it will determine whether the June return to profitability extends beyond a single quarter.
Lower interest-rate conditions and stronger merchandise exports are constructive sector conditions, but labour shortages and higher fuel prices remain counterweights. The current data cannot establish whether REXP’s improved operating performance is durable, and the unusually high P/E leaves the share particularly exposed to any weaker follow-through in the next filing.
